The FD-400 Series ultrasonicdoppler flowmeters measure theflow of liquids that contain soundreflectors, suspended solids, or gasbubbles larger than 100 microns.These sophisticated instrumentsautomatically adjust filtering andgain settings to produce reliablereadings in a wide range of liquidand reflector conditions.

The FD-400 flowmeter transmittsultrasonic sound through the pipewall or from the probe tip into theflowing liquid by using piezoelectriccrystals contained in the transducerand probe tip. The sound is thenreflected by sonic reflectorssuspended in the liquid andrecorded by the receiver. If thesonic reflectors are moving withinthe sound transmission path, soundwaves will be reflected at afrequency shifted (Doppler frequency)from the transmitted frequency. Thedifference between the 2 frequenciesis directly proportional to the speedof the sonic reflectors, resulting in aliquid flow rate that is converted tovarious user-defined units.

Configuration of the FD-400 isaccomplished via the front-panelkeypad. A 2-line backlit LCD displaysrate and total in user-selected units.Power supply options include ACand DC. Optional outputs include4 to 20 mA, relays, and rate pulse.

Two transducer styles are available.The FD-400C clamp-on, non-intrusivetransducer is recommended for mostmetal or plastic pipes. The FD-400Chas a NEMA 6P (IP68) rating and isavailable in a high-temperatureversion, "=HT". The user can placethese clamp-on transducers up to305 m (1000') from the displayenclosure. The FD-400I insertionprobe transducer should be usedon piping systems that do notpermit ultrasonic penetration. TheFD-400I inserts into the pipe walland comes into direct contact withthe flowing liquid.
