Description

The D8000 series USB interface modules are a familyof complete data acquisition modules for use in processcontrol systems. The analog input models can measureprocess signals such as thermocouples, 4 to 20 mAcurrent loops, and discrete contact closures. The analogoutput models can generate voltage or current signalsfor controlling annunciators or valves. The digital inputand output models can sense the state of remote digitalsignals or control solid state relays. Complete dataacquisition systems can be created with ease with theD8000 modules and a host computer.

The modules provide direct connection to a wide varietyof sensors and annunciators such as thermocoupleprobes, 4 to 20 mA loops, and DC voltage. Theyperform all signal conditioning, linearization and containno internal pots or DIP switches. All user-selectablefeatures such as ranges, communications settings arestored in nonvolatile EEPROM, which maintains thesevalues even after power is removed.

The D8000 series USB interface modules connect toa host computer using a USB interface cable and theycommunicate using a virtual serial communications portusing the Modbus RTU protocol.

Use a USB cable to connect the D8000 to a hostcomputer. Plugging the cable into the computer willcreate a virtual serial port in the computer. The virtualserial port will be used by the host to communicate withthe module. Serial communication ports are supportedby almost all data acquisition and process controlprograms in the marketplace.

The Modbus RTU protocol is used to read and writedata values to the D8000 series modules. The ModbusRTU protocol is a serial protocol and communicateswith external devices through serial ports. The ModbusRTU protocol is widely recognized throughout the dataacquisition industry and is supported by almost allcommercial process control programs.

Multiple D8000 series modules can be connected toone host computer. A unique and separate serial portis created for each module that is connected. Theserial port approach provides instant compatibility withalmost all industry standard data acquisition programsthat support the Modbus RTU protocol.

With the D8000 series modules, anyone familiar witha personal computer can construct a data acquisitionsystem. This approach to data acquisition is veryflexible, easy to use and cost effective. The modulescan be mixed and matched to fit your application. Youdo not need engineering experience in complicateddata acquisition hardware to build a system.

ANALOG INPUT MODULES
The D8100 through D8400 series analog inputmodules contain seven differential analog inputchannels. Each module contains analog signalconditioning circuits that are optimized for a specificsignal input type. Signal types include DC voltage,4 to 20 mA current loops, and eight thermocoupletypes. Each input channel can be programmed toaccept a different signal input range.

The sensor signals are converted to digital datawith a microprocessor-controlled integrating A/Dconverter. Offset and gain errors in the analog circuitryare continuously monitored and corrected usingmicroprocessor techniques.

The analog input modules communicate the resultantdata values as 16-bit unsigned integer numbersthat represent a percentage of the full. The modulescontinuously convert data values at the rate of up to25 conversions per second and store the latest resultin a buffer. The data values are requested by sendinga Modbus query to the module. The D8000 seriesmodules will instantly respond by communicating thedata values back to the host processor.

ANALOG OUTPUT MODULES
The D8500 analog output modules contain two12-bit digital to analog converters (DAC) for generatingeither voltage or current output signals. The outputsignal type for each DAC is user-selectable and eachDAC is independently controlled via a host computerusing the Modbus RTU protocol. Four different analogoutput ranges are available, two voltage ranges and twocurrent ranges.

The D8500 analog output modules contain userselectablefeatures such as programmable outputslew rate, a communications watchdog timer andprogrammable startup signal value. They also includean 8-bit analog to digital converter for analog readbackthe output signal.

The communications watchdog timer can be usedto move the analog output signal to a known “safe”condition in the event of a communications failure.

DIGITAL INPUT MODULES
The D8710 digital input modules contain 15 individualinputs for monitoring logic levels, contact closures, orother ON/OFF signals in a data acquisition system. Each digital input terminal contains a pull-up biasingresistor allowing for direct connection to a set ofcontacts. The input terminals can accept signalsbetween ±30 Vdc without damage.

DIGITAL OUTPUT MODULES
The D8720 digital output modules contain 15 individualopen-collector transistor outputs for controllingannunciators, lamps, or other devices that require anON/OFF signal.

The D8720 digital output modules also containprogrammable features such as a communicationswatchdog timer and programmable startup signalvalues for each bit.

The communications watchdog timer can be usedto move the digital output signals to a known “safe”condition in the event of a communications failure.

COMMUNICATIONS
The D8000 series modules are designed to easilyinterface with computers using a USB interface. TheUSB interface creates a virtual serial communicationsport on the host computer. All communications to andfrom the module, through the virtual serial port areperformed using the Modbus RTU protocol. A newserial port is added for each D8000 series module.

MODBUS COMMAND SET
The D8000 series modules use the Modbus RTUprotocol for communications. The Modbus RTU binaryprotocol uses a master-slave technique, in which onlythe master device can initiate transactions. The slavedevices respond by supplying the requested data tothe master or by performing the requested action inthe query. The master can address any slave device. The returned messages are considered responsemessages. The supported master function codes are:

PROCESS CONTROL SOFTWARE
Modbus RTU protocol is one of the most widelysupported serial protocols in the data acquisitionmarket. Modbus RTU software drivers are availablefor almost every data acquisition software programavailable today. Thus providing instant connectivitybetween the D8000 modules and most dataacquisition software programs.

SETUP
The D8000 series modules are initialized at thefactory using the Modbus RTU protocol. Userselectable features such as individual channel rangeselection and digital filters are easily configuredusing the D6000/D8000 series utility software. EachD8000 module must be properly configured beforeinstallation into a Modbus system.

UTILITY SOFTWAREComplimentary Utility Software is included with eachmodule. The software is compatible with Windowsoperating systems and distributed on CDROM.The Utility Software simplifies configuration of alluser selectable options such as device address, baud rate and filtering constants. The latest versionof our software is always available on our web site.
